September is Women in Medicine Month, so we’re excited to spotlight Dr. Anikia Nelson, a pediatrician and clinical strategist at Doximity. Balancing the responsibilities of being a new mom and team member at Doximity is no small feat. We followed Dr. Nelson to get a glimpse of how she manages her daily routine while contributing to influential projects in healthcare.
7:00 A.M.
Dr. Nelson starts her day early, making sure she has time for breakfast and getting her two kids off to school before the work day officially begins. As a second-time mom, she takes pumping breaks every three hours to ensure she can provide for her baby while balancing her schedule.
8:30 A.M.
The workday begins with a thorough check of Slack and email. Dr. Nelson reviews and triages requests from her team and coworkers, addressing urgent matters first. Today, she answers questions from a Product Manager in our Slack “Doctor’s Lounge” channel. The Doximity team values using physician-friendly language in our products, and Dr. Nelson’s expertise is essential here.
9:00 A.M.
Next, Dr. Nelson shifts her focus to recruiting advisors for an exciting new project to enhance Doximity’s AI tools, including GPT and Answers. She emails and schedules calls with some of the nation's top physicians, aiming to gather a diverse and knowledgeable advisory board. Our mission is to help physicians be more productive and provide better care for their patients, so working collaboratively with physician leaders is essential to everything that we do.
11:00 A.M.
It's time to review some member data. Dr. Nelson is drafting a report that Doximity will publish later this year. The Doximity Telemedicine Report has become a go-to source for health systems looking to understand physician attitudes, needs, and usage in telemedicine, and this new report will use a similar approach for AI. Dr. Nelson analyzes the data from physician surveys and product usage stats, ensuring the report is accurate and insightful.
12:30 P.M.
Lunch is a quick affair, often enjoyed at her desk while she prepares for afternoon meetings. Dr. Nelson uses this time to review notes and agendas, making sure she’s prepared for the discussions ahead. With many of her colleagues on the West Coast, the afternoon in Atlanta is prime time for meetings.
1:00 P.M.
The early afternoon is filled with meetings with team members about various projects. Dr. Nelson collaborates with colleagues, providing her clinical insights and helping guide the direction of ongoing projects.
3:00 P.M.
Dr. Nelson takes a quick break. These moments provide a brief respite in her otherwise hectic day.
3:30 P.M.
It’s time to get on a webinar. Dr. Nelson runs webinars to educate physicians at our health system and hospital clients about the Doximity platform. She’s given this talk many times, and she wants to keep her energy high to engage the audience. The attendees have good questions about their proprietary EHR configuration that Dr. Nelson flags for follow-up.
4:30 P.M.
Next on the agenda is preparing for an upcoming conference. At this conference, she’ll be hosting a “fireside chat” with a physician colleague, so she reviews the topics and follow-up questions to ensure that the conversation covers all the key topics. Dr. Nelson relishes the chance to share the Doximity story and educate physicians and customers about Doximity products.
5:00 P.M.
As part of a remote team, Dr. Nelson wraps up her day by documenting ideas, sending updates to her team, and ensuring everyone is aligned and prepared for next steps. With her work day complete, she shifts gears to spending quality time with her family. She and her husband work together to keep the kids engaged (family dance party, anyone?) while they prepare dinner, a meal they all get to share together. Then it's off to bath and bedtime for the kids.
Balancing motherhood and a demanding career is challenging. But, Dr. Nelson’s dedication and effective time management leads to success in both arenas. Her contributions, passion, and commitment to the healthcare community are impactful.
