Gen Z Healthcare Trends to Watch

Jun 28, 2023 | Brinn Durchholz - Doximity Marketing Director

Healthcare has always been an evolving industry, with new technologies and trends shaping how we access and receive care. As we continue into 2023, it's clear that Gen Z is poised to be a major force in healthcare, and their preferences and behaviors will likely shape the industry for years to come.

We talked about what to consider when it comes to Gen Z in the physician workforce, but what are some of the key trends to watch when it comes to Gen Z and healthcare? Let's take a closer look.

 1. Telehealth: Convenience is Key

One trend that has accelerated dramatically over the past few years is telehealth. Gen Z, like many other generations, values convenience and accessibility, and telehealth offers both. Whether it's a virtual consultation with a doctor or a remote monitoring app that helps patients manage chronic conditions, telehealth is becoming an increasingly important part of the healthcare landscape.

For healthcare organizations, incorporating new technologies can create more flexible health care delivery models that better meet the needs of more patients. Investing in telehealth solutions, leveraging user-friendly apps, and providing online resources can all help organizations better serve Gen Z.

2. Mental Health: Addressing Stigma and Increasing Access

Mental health is another area where Gen Z is leading the charge. This generation is more open about mental health than any other, and they're increasingly vocal about the need to address stigma and increase access to care. In fact, in a recent survey, 71% of Gen Z  consumers confirmed they want brands to make mental health part of their marketing and communication. As we’ve already seen, the demand for mental health services and treatment will only continue to grow.

Healthcare organizations can invest in resources that educate patients and their families about mental health programs, treatments, research, and support. And by leveraging social media and other digital channels, healthcare organizations can help spread awareness and reduce the stigma around mental health.

3. Social Media: Building Connections and Fostering Engagement

Gen Z, a generation that has grown up with social media, recognizes its power as a tool for building connections and fostering engagement. Healthcare organizations can also use social media to communicate with patients, share information, and build relationships.

Creating social media campaigns that promote health and wellness can be an effective way to reach younger patients. Organizations can also build relationships with social media influencers and public figures to help spread the word about important health issues.

4. Health Equity: Addressing Systemic Barriers

Gen Z is a generation that values equity and social justice. They also value brands that make tangible and visible commitments to social causes. This means that healthcare organizations that want to connect with younger patients must proactively address systemic barriers to care, such as racism and discrimination.

Organizations can also invest in diversity and inclusion initiatives to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all patients.

Healthcare organizations that want to connect with Gen Z need to be proactive about addressing the trends and preferences that matter most to this emerging demographic. By investing in telehealth, mental health, social media, and health equity, healthcare organizations can better serve the needs of younger patients and build lasting relationships with this vital group.
